We have been using this system since mid December 2021 or June 2022. We have had it for 6 months now and it is working well. Being able to pump a lot of power into our battery pack while reaching and leaving an anchor point is awesome! We believe that in the future, high power transformers will be the norm on ships instead of generators. This is already an option from some boat manufacturers and it’s good to see.
We’ve talked to friends who have Mastervolt, Balmar or other high performance Electromaxx early models who are also happy with their setup. There are many new options available, so check them all out to find the best one for your application. Regardless of the brand, we are fans of this technology and think that high power transformers are a fantastic solution for sailors.
FYI, friends with other high powered people have warned us that we will see a slight drop in all of our speeds. This is because the power is directed to the battery. For our design, this is about half the price. For example, if we use one engine to go at 1800 rpm, we go about 5 knots, now it is 4.5 knots.
The team responded to my questions, concerns and feedback during installation, setup and use. I spoke with Rob, one of the lead engineers, who helped me fix the wiring diagram and installation. There were a few bugs at the beginning of our design (our model is pre-production. So I signed up to be a real pig), but the experts at Electromaax helped us to fix most of them. One problem is that the alternator is hot (as expected, it’s hot) causing an alarm on the starter battery (since it’s close to the alternator). We added a motor cover next to the battery and that solved the problem. The only remaining bug is that our tachometer is not working properly since installation, but we can see our revs by connecting our computer to the system. We still don’t know what caused the problem, but once we fix it, we’ll update here.

For the most part everything is surprising and plug and play. Even detailed wiring instructions for our catamaran (with 2 Yanmar 39s) were sent before we installed it. If you have a good understanding of 12V wiring and tools to complete the installation, you can do it yourself. Personally, I don’t have good wire cutters or hydraulic crimpers for such tough cables, so I knew right away that it was best to hire a professional.
Even if you don’t choose other high-end manufacturers, I recommend the serpentine pulley and belt tensioner kit. In the case of our Yanmars, the 39 tends to eat the V-belts and replacing them is tedious. If you’re having the same dust problem that we’ve been having for the past 6 years, you’ll think this is the best thing since sliced bread
