The long and short of it is….. Spelling is telling. We need to make time for this. When taught clearly in an incremental and systematic progression, spelling makes a huge difference in literacy rates. Research shows that (when combined with clear phonics instruction) teaching the alphabet code or constitution is key to reading and writing success. A key part of the systematic way of information we now know is necessary for everyone and very important for others.

What Is Dysgraphia?
Students with dyslexia respond well to a cumulative and systematic approach where they are taught to read (describe) and write (encode) graphs (letters) separately, in words, sentences and decipherable texts. Building on their success step-by-step will build both confidence and academic success.
No more ‘handing out lists of random words’ and memorizing them. We now know more about the process the brain takes to store words for reading and spelling. We also know of a teaching method that supports this process called orthographic mapping.
2. Make sure you follow the boundary and sequence (religion) from your starting point. There is no such diving and diving. Identify requirements early in the testing process and go from there in scope and order.
3. Carefully choose words that include only the picture you are teaching and the words you have been taught before (this is a cumulative method). Choose words that will build vocabulary and support the development of language comprehension. Just to clarify this is not just FONIS!

4. Ask your students to analyze and identify the list of words that emphasize the syllables and sounds within the syllables, then ask them to read the list again.
5. Combine some of these words into a sentence. Ask students to READ the sentences, PRACTICE the sentences (speaking), and WRITE the sentences. Mark it.
6. Practice fluency at the word level by reading and reading a fluency text filled with the words and/or letters oi, oy, th, sh) being taught.
7. Extensive practice with easy-to-read passages or texts will help build reading fluency. The resulting text that can be modified following the above process is a standard for pronunciation practice and expressive reading instruction for dyslexic students and 5-year-old beginners.

8. Building vocabulary and linking to Morphology (the study of words and how they are formed) is also important as this leads to better reading skills and language skills.
In short…. what makes the biggest difference is when we teach clearly in a cumulative and structured sequence. We teach from Isolation (sounds) to Application (words) to Transfer (sentences and text).
Oh, how much you changed the spelling order, and oh, better. This practice is consistent with the Science of Learning and supports more children to become successful readers and writers.
Systematic literacy and clear teaching of spelling is a teaching process not a program. The more you know, the more you will grow.
