QA stands for Quality Assurance. At a high level, QA testing exists to confirm that the product you’re building is the product the customer wants and is released without bugs.

Back then, software developers would build software, give it to QA testers, and testers would manually test the software and send a list of bugs to be fixed.
The new wave of QA is better. At Devmountain, we train people for the new wave of QA, which means QA is involved in every step of the agile development process. QA testers sit in on design meetings, on conversations with customers, on all standups and look at code as developers write it, instead of waiting for the entire product to be finished.
A QA tester specializes in having a customer mindset to promote customers and ask questions to ensure everyone is on the same page and nothing is missed. In the long run, QA saves time and money.
When interviewing a QA engineer, I look for good questions. At Devmountain, we look for students who can ask effective questions, see mistakes and contradictions, notice missing pieces. The type that likes to solve problems. Someone who can drill down and won’t settle for easy answers.

It depends on. Every company has a different idea of what a QA engineer should be. You can find a really successful QA engineer or QA analyst who can’t code. You can find other companies that want mid to senior level developers who also know how to do QA.
I mentored a student who ran a cleaning business and is now an automation engineer. I had another student whose only job after high school was delivering donuts, and he ended up training his entire QA department. You don’t really need a technical background to get into QA testing. You can have a successful career with a small amount of programming.
Learning at least one programming language will make you more marketable. The big four (in my experience) are Java, C#, JavaScript and Python. I think JS and Python are more forgiving for newcomers, but automation is also more forgiving than development. I advise many of the people I coach inside and outside of Devmountain to check out the meetups and user groups around them to see where they can get the most support.
What Does A Qa Analyst Do? Testing Out This Tech Career
There is no exact standard “QA portfolio.” At Devmountain, we give students practical experience with a number of projects. Whenever possible, we get real projects for them to work on. It could be a company that invites our students to test their products. We want to make sure they have written good test plans to demonstrate along with good Github automation that they can show potential employers. These experiences can be used as talking points in interviews.
If a lot of automation is listed in the job description, you should count on whiteboarding in the interview. However, coding challenges are more common in QA. In all QA interviews, you should expect to answer sample scenarios. They can also give specific examples related to the lack of supply in relation to demand for these jobs. When students graduate from Devmountain, they tend to move into QA Analyst or QA Engineer roles. Most automation positions expect you to know a lot of coding. For our students who already know a good amount of code, it is possible to move straight into an automation position. Jobs with “automation” in the description tend to be mid-to-senior jobs when it comes to QA. I’ve seen students with three months of experience qualify for mid-level positions when they gain a little more knowledge.
The job will continue to change, but the demand for it will only grow along with the industry. Before I came to Devmountain, the demand exceeded the supply of QA engineers. I’ve seen expectations change more in QA than in any other position in the tech world. As development changes, QA must change with it.

There’s always been this stigma: “You can’t hack it in development? Just go into QA.” That thought is not entirely wrong. QA is easier to start than development. You don’t need to learn full-stack development perfectly, so there’s less pressure on QA. There are many people who have used QA as a stepping stone to the rest of the technology industry.
A question I like to ask prospective students is, “Would you rather take a design and then build something that meets those requirements? Or would you rather take the product and prove whether or not the design meets the requirements?” Would you be happier doing something that meets expectations or breaking something?
It is a misconception that QA engineering is not as lucrative as web development. If you are willing to put in the work to get into automation, you will earn a salary equivalent to a web developer. You are basically a developer who is all about quality,
If you stick to manual QA, you may not earn much or may grow into a more technically savvy QA engineer. The average salary for a manual QA tester salary is ~$78,566/year, according to Zip Recruiter.

I think it’s easier to grow faster in QA than development because the industry lacks people with technical QA skills while there are many developers.
There are sites like Guru99 or Meetups and organizations like The Ministry of Testing. Locally, I’m part of a QA group called Punto. Find a Meetup near you! There are not many good resources for QA.
To find out if QA is a career you want, I recommend finding a website and playing around with it. See if you can break it. Take a look at the internet and video games to see if you can cause problems. If you get the thrill, that’s a good place to start.
