A US-based cell phone retailer that offers phones through the Lifeline Assistance program is selling a cell phone pre-installed with not one, but two malicious apps. In October 2019, we saw many complaints in our support system from users of government-issued phones who reported that some pre-installed applications were malicious. We have purchased UMX U683CL to further assist our customers and validate their claims.
We informed Assurance Wireless of our findings and asked them why a US-based mobile carrier would sell a device infected with malware. After we gave them enough time to respond, unfortunately we never heard back. Here’s what we found out.
The first questionable app found on the UMX U683CL presents itself as an update called Wireless Update. Yes, it can update the mobile device. In fact, it is the only way to update the operating system (OS) of the mobile device. On the contrary, it has the ability to install apps automatically without users’ permission.

So we identified this app as Android/PUP.Riskware.Autoins.Fota.fbcvd, a detection name that should be familiar to Android customers. That’s because the app is actually a variant of Adups, a Chinese company that has been caught collecting user data, creating backends for mobile devices and, yes, developing auto-installers.
From the moment you log in to your mobile device, Wireless Update starts installing applications automatically. To repeat: No permission is received from users to do this, there are no buttons to press to accept the installation, it just installs the apps itself. While the apps it installs are clean and malware-free, it’s important to note that these apps are added to the device with zero notification or permission required from the user. This opens up the possibility of accidentally installing malware in a future update to one of the apps that Wireless Update adds every now and then.
It is a great disappointment that I have to write about a non-removable app that is already installed on the UMX U683CL phone: the mobile device itself.

These names alone are not enough to make a strong connection. But, with the fact that the number is almost the same, and we can trust and confirm the game.
The only difference between the two numbers is their correct names. Most variants of this malware use Chinese characters for variable names. Therefore, we can assume that the origin of this malware is China.

Although we have not yet encountered any additional malware ourselves, our users have reported that HiddenAds variants appear unexpectedly on their UMX mobile devices.
Apart from the malware being of Chinese origin, it is worth mentioning that this UMX mobile device is manufactured by a Chinese company. This may just be a coincidence rather than a sign of indifference – we can’t confirm whether the device makers knew that the Chinese malware was already installed.
Although we have a way to remove pre-installed tools for existing users, this has consequences on UMX. Remove Wireless Update, and you may miss important OS updates. We think it’s worth the trade-off, and we recommend it.
