Series 79 Exam Pass Rate – For the Series 79 exam, you can find detailed information on the FINRA website. However, it will only give a general idea of the part that will be tested. If you want to know which part gives students the most headaches, we will explain a little in today’s post.
The Series 79 exam is the most difficult FINRA exam that investment bankers take in their careers. Although the questions tested on each exam are slightly different, there is a more general sequence.

That is, the proportion of exams that focus on the rules, regulations, and events of the investment banking process rather than the analytical portion. The division between them is quite consistent. Most questions are non-analytical in nature, while a minority are analytical.

Needless to say, it is the analytical portion of the exam that causes the most problems. Series 79 students ask for explanations on this topic over 90% of the time. Of course, this part is difficult for most people. This is even more difficult for people without a finance or accounting background.
Questions are rarely straightforward, and usually require two or three steps to arrive at a definitive answer (Hint: if you think you’ve found the answer to a question in one step, you’ve found a very rare question, or perhaps you’ve answered incorrectly).
Typically some basic algebra is used. Typically you will need to solve X, then, using three variables where two are given, you may need to solve X again.
The best way to approach this section is to ask a lot of questions. Combined with memorizing as many formulas as possible, this process will help a lot. The trick often lies in interpreting the language of the question. If you answer enough questions, you’ll learn what complex language to use and what formulas are appropriate for different types of questions.

What adds further complexity to this part of the exam is that sometimes two different formulas may be used to solve the same type of question.
For example, when asked to calculate the interest coverage ratio, it is important to understand that the definition includes two formulas:
If you find a question with enough information to solve both formulas, then you should do so. There will not be a correct answer for both formulas on the exam, but there will be one. Therefore, you may have to try both formulas to get the correct answer.
This is sometimes true for the Debt/Equity formula as well. Sometimes it includes both short-term and long-term debt as “Debt,” and sometimes it includes only long-term debt as “Debt.” As with the interest coverage ratio, you may have to try both options to see if you get the right answer.

Your success on Series 79 test day depends not only on how many hours you prepare, but also on whether you prepare correctly. Along the way, it’s a good idea to check to see if your studies are paying off. One of the most effective ways to do this is to take Series 79 practice tests to gauge your progress. Practice tests are useful because they show you exactly where you need to improve your performance. Whenever you take a free Series 79 exam practice test, pay special attention to these three sets of questions:
This will show you exactly what your weak areas are and where you need to spend more time studying. Ask yourself why each of these questions is causing you a problem. Is it because you don’t understand the material? Is it because you don’t remember the vocabulary? Do you need more repetitions of these types of questions to build speed and confidence? Take a look at these questions and think about how you can strengthen your weak areas when you return to review the material.
In addition, many of the 79 series practice tests have sections that explain the answer choices. It may be tempting to read the explanation and think that you now understand the concept. However, the explanation is likely to cover only part of the broader context of the issue. Even if the explanation makes sense, go back and explore each concept related to the question until you are sure you have a complete understanding.
As you go, remember that the Series 79 practice tests are just practice. Memorizing these questions and answers will not be very helpful in the real test since no question will be the same. If you only know the correct answers to standard questions, you won’t be ready for the real thing. Study the concepts until you understand them completely, then you will be able to answer any question presented in the test.
