AJ Larson, Director of Devmountain’s Quality Assurance Bootcamp, explains how QA fits into the software development cycle, the tools you need to know to become a QA tester, and the difference between web development work and QA work.
QA stands for Quality Assurance. At a high level, there is QA Testing to verify that the product you produce is the product the customer wants and is released without bugs.
In the past, software developers would build their software, give it to QA testers, and the testers would manually test the software and send back a list of bugs to fix.
The new wave of QA is more efficient. At Devmountain, we train people for the new wave of QA, which means QA is involved in every step of the agile development process. QA testers sit in design meetings, they’re on calls with clients, they’re in every situation, and they see the code as soon as developers write it, instead of waiting for the whole product to be done.

I tutored a student who ran a home cleaning business and is now an Automation Engineer. I had another student who had the same job after high school delivering donuts and he ended up training his entire QA department. You definitely don’t need a technical background to get into QA Testing. You can have a successful career with several programs.
Knowing at least one programming language will make you more marketable. The big four (in my experience) are Java, C#, JavaScript and Python. I think JS and Python are more forgiving for newcomers, but automation is also more forgiving in development. I encourage many of the people I support inside and outside of Devmountain to check out the meetups and user groups around them to see where they can get the most support.
There is no standard “QA portal”. At Devmountain, we equip students with experience in various projects. Whenever possible, we get real-world projects for them to work on. It could be a company that invites our students to try their products. We will make sure they have a good test plan written to demonstrate and good automation on Github that they can show their employer. This experience can be used as a talking point in the interview.
If a lot of automation is listed in the job description, you should expect a whiteboard in the interview. However, code challenges are more common in QA. In every QA interview, you should expect to answer sample scenarios. It can provide specific examples related to the lack of supply in relation to the demand for these jobs as well. When students graduate from Devmountain, they gravitate toward QA Analyst or QA Engineer roles. Most positions automatically expect you to know more code. For our students who already have a good knowledge of code, it is possible to jump directly into the state of automation. Projects with “automation” in the description tend to be mid-level to QA-level work. I have seen students with three months of experience qualify for this mid-level position once they get their hands on a little more experience.
The work will continue to change, but the needs will only grow along with the business. Before I came to Devmountain, the demand exceeded the supply of QA engineers. I’ve seen expectations change more with QA than any other role in the tech world as well. As development changes, QA must change with it.
There’s always this stigma: “Can’t find it in development? Just go into QA.” That mindset is not entirely wrong. QA tends to be easier to start in than development. You don’t need to learn perfect full-stack development, so less pressure on QA. There are many people who have successfully used QA as a stepping stone into the rest of the tech industry.
One question I like to ask prospective students is, “Would you rather get a design and then build something that meets those requirements?” Or would you rather receive the product and check whether the design meets the requirements or not?” Would you rather make something that meets expectations or violates something?

In my opinion, it is easier to grow faster in QA than it is in development because the industry lacks people with technical QA skill sets while there are many developers.

To find out if QA is the career you want, I recommend finding a website and playing around with it. See if you can change it. Mess around with the internet and video games to see if you can cause problems. If you can find that joy, that’s a great place to start.
