Papers 1 and 2 have 24 questions. Fractions must be simplified, but can be left as improper fractions.

We have developed a number of support pages to help you understand how to multiply and divide fractions.

This support page shows how to convert odd fractions to mixed numbers and how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.

At the end of the quiz you will be given the opportunity to see your results by clicking on ‘View Result’.

This will take you to a new website where your results will be displayed. You can print a copy of your results from this page, either as a PDF or as a hard copy.

For incorrect answers we have added some helpful study points to explain which answer is correct and why.

We do not collect personal data from our quizzes, except in the fields ‘Name’ and ‘Group/Class’, which are optional and only used by teachers to identify students in their educational environment.

It’s my passion! Helping children understand mathematics. Not only can you answer a math question by adding numbers to a formula, but you can also understand why the formula works.

Today’s Multiplying Fractions activity is a way for kids to not only learn how to multiply a fraction by a fraction, but to show them why and how it works.

This is such an easy activity to do, but it’s a powerful way to help kids actually see what happens when you multiply fractions by fractions.

It’s finally time for an answer. To discover the answer, we look at the whole series. The first question to ask our children is: “How many parts does a whole sequence have?”

Once your students understand how modeling works, you can take the next step and imagine how to multiply a fraction by a fraction without drawing a sequence. And of course I like to connect the two through questions!

Now all you have to do is show them that when you multiply a fraction by a fraction, you…

This FREE digital activity for Google Slides uses surface models to make sense of dividing fractions so your students understand the standard algorithm.

Dividing fractions is probably one of the most difficult standards to learn in sixth grade. Then add the use of models and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed! We often skim or skip using and teaching models with our students because they can be confusing not only for our students but for us as well! When we teach division of fractions through modeling, it is a powerful and useful tool that, if used correctly, can deepen our students’ understanding.

The purpose of visual models is to help our students understand why. Have you ever heard the phrase “don’t ask why, just reverse and multiply”? Our teachers often taught us math this way, simple procedures with little or no deeper understanding.

Fortunately, we have found that real learning comes from helping children understand the reasons behind actions. They can even “discover” the procedures themselves. This type of math learning leads to proper understanding and is less likely to be memorized and then forgotten by our students.

Before we can help our students understand fraction models, we need to understand them ourselves. When we divide a fraction by a fraction, we are actually saying that I take the fraction and make groups the size of the other fraction.

For example, ½ ÷ ⅓ tells how many groups of size ⅓ can be made from ½. The answer is 3/2 or 1 ½ groups.

Multiplying And Dividing Fractions Activity

In some fraction division problems, you can only make a partial group; ⅓ ÷ ½ = ⅔ groups or I can make ⅔ groups if ½ is my new total and ⅓ is what I have.

Writing About Math: Multiplying And Dividing Fractions

When you divide a fraction by ½ by ⅓, you take your dividend fraction, or what is divided, ½, and then divide it horizontally into thirds. This now allows you to easily see ⅓ of the total while doing the common denominator. Then count the pieces needed to make ⅓ of your new total.

In this case it is 2, so when you reverse and multiply, 2 becomes your denominator. Then count the number of pieces you originally had by ½. In this example, it is 3, which makes it your counter.

If you circle the number of groups you can make with your new denominator, 2, from your numerator, 3, you’ll find that you can make 1 group of 2 or a whole and then you’ll end up with 1 of 2 pieces. or 1½. This is the number you find when you simplify your improper fraction by inverting your expression and multiplying.

There are two parts to this digital resource. First, students create a fraction model by drawing and overlapping two fraction parts. They then count the number of parts used for their new denominator and numerator.

Multiplying Fractions Worksheet

They will complete the first slide by finding and circling the number of groups they find with their new entity.

On the second slide, students will reverse the original problem and multiply. They then simplify this answer if necessary to connect their thinking to the model.

If you have students who are still struggling with understanding models, drawing their own models can be a powerful tool. If needed, models draw with them so they have the extra lift they need while still putting pen to paper.

Multiplying And Dividing Fractions Activity

It may also help if you start with more familiar fractions than the ones used above. As students become more confident in their models with familiar fractions, you can begin to add more complex fractions to deepen their understanding.

Multiplying And Dividing Fractions Interactive Worksheet

I know learning with models can be intimidating. As a second year teacher moving into sixth grade, I just wanted to skip them. Don’t do it! Models are powerful tools, and there’s a reason they’re included in the Common Core Math Standards. You and your students may also need some time to practice.

But the “aha” moment students have when they connect the standard inverting and multiplying algorithm to their models makes it totally worth it!

I’m excited to share this free resource to help teach fraction division with models in your classroom. It’s a simple and effective tool that you can already copy and share with your students!
