Assurance Wireless Compatible Phones 2019

Assurance Wireless Compatible Phones 2019 – A few months after the first government-sponsored mobile phone study was published, a concerned user contacted us about his device, the ANS UL40. After a thorough investigation, we again discovered pre-installed malware.

At the time of this writing, UMX (Unimax) Communications has officially removed all pre-installed malware from the UMX U683CL. Their latest firmware update fixed the problem.

Note that if you’re infected with Android/Trojan.HiddenAds.WRACT, you’ll still need to uninstall it – even though Play Protect will warn users to uninstall it, saying it’s dangerous.

Assurance Wireless Phone Upgrade: Everything You Need To Know

We would like to thank UMX (Unimax) Communications for resolving this issue, although they still refuse to take ownership. In January, UMX issued a public statement:

After investigating the issue, Unimax Communications has determined that the programs described in the post are not malware… However, upon reviewing these programs, Unimax Communications has determined that there may be a potential vulnerability in the Settings Application Library. Therefore, Unimax Communications has updated the software to fix the potential vulnerability. As far as Unimax Communications knows, no customer information has been leaked.

We stand by our initial claim that the program itself is malicious because it works as a trojan dropper – the delivery of the HiddenAds trojan on UMX devices is indisputable.

The main purpose of our posts is to inform and protect users: both customers and non-customers. In addition, we have brought this issue to the press to request a resolution if UMX customers have no other options. So we are pleased that Unimax is taking action so that our users and their users can use the device safely. , but we are disappointed that such a public action was taken to find a solution in the first place.

At the time of initial publication, we were unable to replicate the Android./Trojan.HiddenAds malware on our test devices, although many users reported that HiddenAds variants were suddenly installed on their UMX phones.

As of today, we can report that our UMX U683CL test phone is infected with a HiddenAds variant that we have detected as Android/Trojan.HiddenAds.WRACT. This variant has been observed in the wild since spring 2019. It runs silently in the background and does not create an app icon. Evidence of it running in the background can be seen in the notifications on your mobile device. The header renaming notification box is highlighted in red below.

Fortunately, there is a way to find and remove this program. If you press and hold the notification, it will provide options for switching:

It will take you to the app’s notification settings. From there, click on the app icon at the top.

A US-funded mobile carrier that provides phones through the Lifeline Assistance Program is selling two mobile devices pre-installed with malware. Assurance Wireless from Virgin Mobile offers the UMX U683CL as the most budget-friendly option. At just $35 under a government-sponsored program, it’s an attractive product. However, the installation content that comes with it is amazing.

In October 2019, we saw complaints in our support system from users of government-issued phones that some pre-installed apps were malicious. We have purchased UMX U683CL to better assist our customers and verify their claims.

We reported our findings to Assurance Wireless and asked them why a US-funded mobile carrier would sell mobile devices infected with pre-installed malware. Unfortunately, after giving them enough time to respond, we never heard back. Here’s what we found.

The first suspicious software found on UMX U683CL is impersonating an updater called Wireless Update. Yes, it can update mobile devices. In fact, this is the only way to update your mobile device’s operating system (OS). Instead, it can automatically install apps without user consent.

Therefore, we detect this program as Android/PUP.Riskware.Autoins.Fota.fbcvd, a detection name that should be familiar to Android customers. That’s because the app is actually a variant of Adups, a Chinese company that collects user data, creates backdoors for mobile devices, and develops automated installers.

Over-the-air updates will automatically install apps from the moment you log in to your mobile device. Let me repeat: it does not ask for user consent, there is no button to click to accept the installation, it just installs the app itself. Although the apps it installs are initially clean and malware-free, it’s important to note that these apps are added to the device with zero notification or user permission. This makes it possible for malware to be installed unknowingly in future updates to any apps added over the air at any time.

I have to write about another non-removable pre-installed software found on the UMX U683CL phone: the mobile device’s own software

The functionality of this program is a very confusing malware we detect as Android/Trojan.Dropper.Agent.UMX. Since the app acts as a control panel for changing settings, deleting it will render the device unusable.

Android/Trojan.Dropper.Agent.UMX shares features with two other variants of known mobile Trojan droppers. The first feature is that it uses the same receiver and service name. It ends with the recipient’s name

The names themselves are too generic to form a strong association. However, combined with the fact that the code is almost identical, we can confidently confirm the match.

The only difference between the two codes is their variable names. A more obvious variant of the malware uses Chinese characters as variable names. Therefore, we can assume that the origin of this malware is China.

The second feature it shares is the embedding of encrypted strings into the code. Decrypting this line will reveal a hidden library file called

Motorola Moto G Power

Although we have not reproduced other malware deliveries, our users have reported that HiddenAds variants were suddenly installed on their UMX mobile devices.

In addition to the fact that the malware is of Chinese origin, it should be noted that the UMX mobile device is also manufactured by a Chinese company. This may be more of a coincidence than an outright complaint – we can’t confirm whether the device manufacturer was aware of the pre-installation of Chinese malware.

While we have a way to remove pre-installed apps for the current user, doing so in UMX has consequences. By uninstalling over-the-air updates, you may miss critical updates to your operating system. We think it’s a worthwhile trade-off and recommend it.

Application, you just created yourself an expensive paperweight. We try to fix this kind of pre-installed malware on the blog: The new landscape of pre-installed mobile malware: embedded malware. see section:

The Mobile Networkwhy Service Assurance Matters For 5g Standalone

As I’ve highlighted in this blog and past blogs, pre-installed malware continues to be a scourge for mobile device users. But now there are mobile devices available through a US government-sponsored program that will raise (or lower, whichever way you look at it) the standards of bad behavior by software companies.

Budget should not determine whether users are secure on their mobile devices. Spend thousands of dollars on an iPhone and avoid pre-installed malware. But are you using government funding to buy hardware and pay for malware? It’s not the kind of existence we imagine without malware.

Having owned a real UMX U683CL, I can tell you that it’s not a bad phone. It feels solid in the hand and runs smoothly. Sure, it’s not the fastest mobile device out there, but it’s a full-featured smartphone. Overall, as long as there is no malware, this device is a good choice for anyone on a budget.

It is important to understand that UMX is not alone. There are many and growing reports of pre-installed malware from cheap manufacturers. While I don’t have an answer to this general question, I can say that American citizens who use the Lifeline Assistance Program and many other programs on tight budgets deserve more. Stay safe out there.
