How To Spell Sight Words
Did you know that there are two different types of sight words that your children need to learn? The first set of words are those that do not follow the “rules” of sound, so children must memorize them.
Low Prep Sight Word Activities
There are also high frequency words that are commonly used in writing. It’s easier for kids to remember, so they can build fluency and not have to sound it out every time they read.
Then simply make copies for all your students. You can run them on one print at a time or copy them so the worksheet is double-sided.
To start this word activity, your children will read the first word in the box. Next, they will use letter stamps to write the word in the middle box.
In the last box, your children will write the sight word. They will continue to read, print and write the sight words until they have completed the worksheet.

Words: These are the first words that students should automatically know. These are words that may or may not be irregular, but are so common that we should know them by heart. Say a word, figure out the individual sounds in the word, then map (match) each sound to the letter(s) it represents.
Some of our oldest and most common words have changed over the centuries so that the spelling and pronunciation no longer match (so said). This can be difficult because the sounds are presented in unusual ways. However, the key is still to pay attention to the sounds in the word and which letters represent them. For example, the word “said” has 3 sounds /s/, /ĕ/, /d/. These sounds are represented by letters
It is unusual for ai to represent the /ĕ/ sound, but noticing how each sound is represented is key to remembering the word.

Map the sounds in the word to the letter(s) that represent the sounds, even if it is not a letter combination that has yet been learned. Only an unusual sound/letter combination needs to be memorized “by heart”. Mapping letter sounds is how we remember how words are spelled and what they look like. See the example below:
Schwa Sound: any vowel can say /ŭ/. Point out that this happens in very common words such as: on, on, was, some, of…
Open Syllable: Many common words are open syllables where there is one vowel and it can escape, so it says the name like: she, me, he, me, go, no….
(Work on about 90% familiar words/sounds and about 10% new words/sounds. We need to keep practicing familiar words for weeks and months so they automatically become part of our long-term memory.)
Sight Word Activities For Parents
Learn and practice sight words this way so students don’t verbalize wrong answers while looking at the word, talk over the teacher and give them time to think. Encourage students to hold their answer in their heads until it’s time to respond to the beat (and not before!)
Use distance search practice to memorize. Use flash cards for the student to “recall” the information. Exercise for short periods and space them out! Exercise for a few minutes many times each day instead of 15 minutes once a day. I used to have flash cards in the kitchen so my kids could go through them quickly during meals and snacks. *Spacing has been shown to produce more long-term learning.
