In November, Derek made the big 4-0! At the beginning of the year (read: pre-crown), we discussed having our first grown-up party at the new house with the kids at the Grammys. Of course, we had to put those plans on the back burner as we returned to round two of semi-quarantine life over Thanksgiving weekend. But we still wanted to celebrate our special someone, so it was a little house birthday party!

Longtime followers and true friends know that Derek and I met in college, so I’ve known him for almost half of my life at that point!

I had lots of access to photos from before her life (including those favorite school photos) so I was able to scan them all and print copies of each one for this special wreath.

This garland is made with my Cricut Maker combo pen for writing numbers and a fine knife to cut out each color in these multi-sized party hats.

I was crazy to see it all together and realized that my husband never has any awkward photos! He was a cute boy, now he’s a handsome young man, don’t you agree?

Birthday cupcake toppers with the same pen and cutting technique on my Cricut. You can get the SVG cut file for the 40th birthday cupcake selection here. Make sure you set the inner points and lines to ‘draw’ under the line type, and the outer shapes to ‘cut’.

Separate both pieces, right-click and click “merge” so Cricut Design Space knows how to design and color these pieces together.

Once it is activated, do not drop the mat between the drawing and cutting steps. This ensures that everything is in line.

A year ago I – GULP – turned 40! It’s not something most of us would expect, but after the last few years I wanted to point something out. It was an important birthday and my husband and I wanted to get our nearest and dearest together and have some fun! Of course I enlisted the help of all my favorite vendors to make it super cute and special! We’ve been going back and forth about going to a party with Covid, but two weeks ago we decided to do it! And it was an unforgettable night.

Jacqueline borrowed disco balls from her friend Sabrina at Golden Arrow Event Design to host the party outside.

They had tables for guests, lovely high tops that spread out over the patio, and the cutest bar and several areas.

The bar was probably my favorite part, and not just because we had the most delicious drinks! I love this beautiful bar from Sweet Salvage Rentals complete with amazing balloons, flowers and of course a disco ball! This look is so good! Plus, Pirouette Paper and Creative Amme created the perfect signs and stir sticks for that extra special touch.

Our birthday boy probably wanted a more low key to celebrate the big 4-0. However, you only get over the “hill” once in your life. You can also score a great deal to celebrate!

A 40th birthday party idea that can never go wrong is an “over the hill” theme. Since our guest of honor wasn’t too interesting, we stuck with this traditional theme. But here are some more 40-year-old themes for your basketball.

Black is a recurring color combination for this popular 40th birthday party theme, so I decided to stick with it. You can only choose one color, but if you don’t have enough decor and supplies, it’s a good idea to bring at least one. The golden tone goes well with this color palette.

Large balloon garlands are an easy choice for a large party. And this was no exception! I got this kit from Amazon for under $20 and made a fun balloon garland using black and gold balloons. It took about 2 hours to blow up and hang all the balloons.

Another great idea is to add a large birthday display. The Happy Birthday banner and 40 balloons are also from Amazon. Shop here for easy party favors that you can make and order ahead of time.

Every party should be well fed. A terrible meal can ruin any birthday party. Instead of traditional appetizers and entrees, we opted for a dessert table.

Donuts are some of the favorite foods here, so we had to include them in a cute display. Don’t miss the RIP Sugar Cookies either. I read a lot of 40 words.

I also added a few containers of extra goodies to tie in with our party details. We used Red Hots for the “40 and Still Hot” container and foam for the “40 Hits” container. You can also use hot tamales, cinnamon buns, or punch pop instead.

You want to make your table look both beautiful and functional for your party guests. Choose displays that will help make all of your party food accessible yet fun.

I bought these stands from Amazon to display the donuts. When creating a dining table, it’s important to find something that measures the height for easy installation. For the cookies I used white plates (shop here)

When looking for paper goods to accompany your party food, don’t just go for old paper plates and plastic containers. Find party supplies that highlight your theme and give you a little stylish bang for your buck.

I found black plates, gold napkins, a black tablecloth and a gold table. Layering tablecloths and runners is an easy option to add texture and character.

Party Tip: Get everything you can out of your color scheme. It adds a lot of style to your feature panel.
